Ice Flyers go back to future with 5-2 win

Bill Vilona, pnj.com 11:05 p.m. CST December 20, 2014

A night later, the Pensacola Ice Flyers had a new energy, a determined focus and transformed into a different team. They were the team that has played most of the season. The one atop the Southern Professional Hockey League standings. After exiting the first intermission scoreless, the Ice Flyers erupted for five goals in the second period and kept that control for a 5-2 win Saturday in a rematch against the Fayetteville FireAntz at the Bay Center.

"It was a good game for 60 minutes, a lot of fun to watch," said Ice Flyers coach Rod Aldoff, whose mood was far different from Friday's 2-1 loss to Fayetteville. "We had a bad night (Friday) and everybody looked themselves in the mirror, stepped up and played a heckuva game. It was good to see. We put the pedal down and kept it down. For the most part, if we can play 60 minutes like that every night, we're a tough team."

Here's what kind of team the Ice Flyers showed Saturday:

They outshot Fayetteville 44-23.

They scored five goals with 12 shots in the second period, after generating 18 first period shots without a puck landing in the net.

Ten different Ice Flyers players had points.
* All three lines scored, led by a line hat trick from the top trio of Corey Banfield, Adam Pawlick and Cody Ferriero.

The four newest players, Nick Lazorko, defenseman Brandon Blair and wingers Nick McParland and Justin Fillion all had points. McParland blasted a slap shot for the team's second goal.

That is always good to see, spreading the scoring around," Aldoff said. "But production is how you play the game. There were a lot of guys who played good defense tonight. Everybody played good defense and that is production, too. "Not everybody is going to get on the game sheet every night ... but there is more to the game than that."  It put a much brighter mood inside the locker room and heading into a brief Christmas break.

The Ice Flyers started their second-period scoring spree last night when Brett Lutes scored 62 seconds into the period. McParland's blast with 13:01 left was followed by Banfield's goal 90 seconds later.

The Ice Flyers led 4-0 when Fayetteville had its brief boost. The FireAntz followed a power play goal with 6:45 remaining in the second period with a Randy Cameron goal off a turnover just 11 seconds later.

But after being blanked on power plays earlier in the game, including a 5-on-3 advantage in the first period, Ferriero produced a power play goal with 2:53 left for a three-goal cushion.

"Obviously, at that time of the game, it was a huge goal," Aldoff said. "(Friday) was tough. But that was (Friday). We still have a good hockey team, a first place team. We definitely have to prove it every night, but we still have a good team." They proved it Saturday night.
