Professional Hockey Hopes To Return To The Gulf Coast

This sounds like great news for us. And we get our forum back!

If they followed the business model of the FireAntz, they'll be successful.  It takes a group of committed local businessmen to establish a solid foundation to build a fan base and get corporate sponsorship.

My fingers & toes are crossed for MS Gulf Coast hockey enthusiasts.  This news could be one of the drivers for the Macon franchise slow-rolling their entry into the League.  It'd be a lot easier on the League schedulers to ice an even eight teams this season, then admit two more for 2015-16.  Slow rebuilding beats rapid expansion in many businesses.

"Hey, what happened to our forum???? Vol? WTF?? lol "

Edited by Surge dude, Today, 09:24 AM.

He gave us heads up about removing the Surge Forum and let us live until May 31 but it looks like we're on our way back.

What's the chances they can pull this off before the next season starts?  Things have got to be getting tight on deadlines at this point.

Additionally... what about the name?  Will they go back to the SeaWolves?  Perhaps a new name entirely?

I just hope they don't go the way of our upcoming MILB team and have a name picking contest that gave us the...Shuckers, Mullets, Shrimpers, Black Jacks, Beacon, or Schooners as possible outcomes.

Finally who will we be getting on the team... I want to see some talent this time around.  Bess played it too close to the chest and too conservatively IMHO.  We need someone to fire the guys up and get some goals on the board.

This won't be the Surge. It'll be a whole new organization with a new name and new management from everything I've been reading on their Facebook and in the paper. Fresh start and a chance to do it right. Very exciting. The Facebook page is South Mississippi Hockey.

I'm hoping it's a go! My daughter and I enjoy driving over to Biloxi to watch our Ice Flyers play. Fun rivalry!! Met some good hockey fans there!!!

If they do bring in a new team, they should sit out a year and let the fans miss it and to get a " expansion" draft as we'll. I say go for the 15/16 season.

I agree Dennis.  I think they would have to try and throw things together in the next 30 days in order for the league to put a schedule together.  I think it would be a mistake to try and rush into a venture like this.  Give yourself a year to plan things out and get a good front office team in place that will promote the team effectively.

I don't know if I agree.  There is the new baseball team, they are working at getting Season Ticker Holders.  If there is no hockey, even for one season, chances are baseball will pick up fans and I have the fear that there are those that will swictch their loyalty from hockey to baseball.  Believe me, we haven't been out a season yet (not counting Katrina postponements) and I have greatly missed it, especially with the possibility of no team here.  Plus, I think there has been work going on with this way longer than any of us might know, I don't think they just popped up in the last month or two to keep hockey here..JMO.

The ball team is having a hard time getting STH, for the price of two blue section for hockey you pay $700 for nose bleed or base line field an they go up from there. When I asked about unused ticket I got, "that hasn't been decided". You also have to remember what July, August and September are like around here...to tell you the truth I don't see it lasting and now we are on the hook for $21 mil. Heck they are still looking for a new contractor that doesn't want an extra $8 million to finish the work.

Baseball is lucky because most, if not all of the salaries, are paid for by the MLB team. The local team only has to pay the non-affiliated players. Like anything else, it will do well the first year or so because it is new. Plus, I think the fact that the casinos are all right there will be a big plus. As far as hockey, I hope we can come back this year, but Mark makes a good point!

This, IMO opinion is the key. If our ownership in Columbus were not tied to Aflac, Im not sure wed be able to suffer the loss that our ownership has season after season.

All the baseball players are paid by the major league team - but the affiliate pays a sizable fee back to the big league club for supplying on-field personnel.

It'd be great to see hockey come back, but only if it is done right. They need to raise sufficient capital to do real marketing efforts, not have meddling owners (McMurphy, Dedeaux, Lindsey, Diaz) and incompetent managers (Yates, Pahlavan) trying to do everything on a shoestring budget with a staff of interns.

And as for "following the Fire Antz business model," Fayetteville draws pretty poorly and treats their players and staff like crap. That's no model to follow.

All I'll say is track record. I agree with Dennis and Mark. We should return no sooner than the 15-16 season.

The guy heading this effort has never stayed longer than 8 months (or more than one season) with a team.

I think he is more using this as an opportunity to live out his dream job as a Team President/General Manager than he is for saving hockey in Biloxi.

I want hockey to return when it's the right time with the right person. Just because there is someone attempting to continue hockey in Biloxi right here and right now doesn't mean they're the right person and it's the right time. Maybe it's just my opinion but hockey in Biloxi can't make too many more mistakes before investors give up on the idea.

Keeping hockey here is great and all but what difference will it make if the team continues the trend that the Surge started? I would rather everyone involved with this new team be a fresh face.

Those stories on WLOX and WXXV were premature. They just got fan's hopes up. We won't play in 2014-2015.

If he hasn't stayed longer than a season with a hockey team (if that's true) could it be because he's fixed the issues that they've had and made it viable?

His dream job could be our hockey reality. I'd rather have someone that considers hockey his dream job spearheading an effort to bring hockey back as opposed to a bean counter that has no clue. If we have to go dark for a season so be it. I'm patient and can wait for a year. With new ideas and new staff he can make hockey the success that it was in years past on the Coast.

Have a little faith and offer some encouragement!!! What he's doing is more than I could so bless him!!

Why such vitriol? That post is obviously intended to inflame emotions and create negative sentiment. Why WOULDN'T we want someone who thinks of this as a dream job to lead this effort? That is the kind of person who will work tirelessly to make our team a success, rather than just drawing a paycheck like some we've had.

Before you draw conclusions why not call the Hockey Office (228-594-3800) and talk to him? Or even go by there, introduce yourself, and ask questions. Have you asked if there is a business plan in place? Or long term plans for the team? Or a plan to attract new sponsors?

And let's DO talk track record. This man didn't just wander in off the street. Did you know this is not the first team he has launched? Did you know he recruited players for the first two Surge teams, some of whom went on to take us to the President's Cup Championship?

The whole point of starting a new organization from the ground up is to NOT repeat past mistakes. This is a brand new era, with a brand new attitude.

The stories on WLOX and WXXV were not premature and didn't raise any false hopes. It was plain to me they were intended to let us know the effort is being made and to not give up. Do I think we will play the 2014-15 season? Probably not. Do I think we will play the 2015-16 season? Yup. Sure do. Is negativity, derision, and defamation going to get and keep a hockey team here? Absolutely not! Is badmouthing the person trying to get us what we want and the effort to do that going to help? Not at all. Instead why not ask "What can I do to help"? Maybe there isn't anything right now. Maybe we just have to leave it to the professionals. But a positive attitude and some encouragement certainly can't hurt. We will have hockey back, better than ever.
