LOL are you serious.  It took all day to finally report on this from the FHL website and they mention that the door is still open possibility for Cornwall to return to the league next year?  They keep showing they have no shame in teams folding in midseason.  What happens to the current players for the Nationals?  They just allowed to go to any team?  If so they might as well shut the season down now.  All the good players will just join the already dominate Prowlers.

Nevermind, I just read the link I posted again and it now has information about the dispersal draft at the bottom.  I feel sorry for the guys chosen by North Shore!!!

It all boils down to Mahfouz not wanting to play far from home....thats what he said on FB last season. I would think he still wants that or he'd at least have went to training camps in the SPHL

Not a surprise at all considering that in the last two seasons 2 teams always fold and 1 new team comes in.

Oh, so it's a business strategy.  Thanks for clearing that up, Chomp.

Wolves assess FHL situation after Nationals depart, host Federals on Friday

By Chris Fitz Gerald - Watertown Daily Times

Quote

WATERTOWN — With the Cornwall Nationals ceasing operations earlier this week, the Watertown Wolves won’t lose any home games this season and in fact, will add one to its Federal Hockey League schedule.

The Wolves were to host the Nationals on Friday night but instead will play the Northern Federals, a team put together by the league that currently is mostly made up of former Cornwall players, at 7:30 p.m. at Watertown Municipal Arena.

Quote

“Some of the players are players left over from Cornwall,” Kirnan said of the Northern Federals squad. “Some of them are players that are vying for roster spots. In our league, the ECHL takes a lot of players from the SPHL and the SPHL moves players back and forth from our league. ... There are literally dozens and dozens of players who are vying to get on someone’s roster, so it gives us a chance to look at some guys.”

... (League commissioner & Watertown Wolves' co-owner Don) Kirnan also said the league is also pursuing and seeking potential expansion teams for next season and is in the process of scouting possible locations in Michigan, Ohio and Maryland.

Of course they are.  :drama:

Friday night's game summary from Watertown (with the Wolves defeating the hodge-podge Northern Federals roster 12-2) lists Junior Fortin as the Feds' head coach.  Fortin was Cornwall's play-by-play announcer & part-time business manager.  This no doubt disappointed some of the more die-hard FHL bashers, who were hoping a different "Junior" would show up again behind an FHL bench.

The slap-dash Northern Federals team have played just 2 games since they were cobbled together by the League last month, and the second game was an exhibition.  Looking at the current FHL standings, all the Fed-Feds have to do is rattle off two straight wins (presuming the Wolves would agree to play them twice more for score) & they'd vault into 2nd place based on winning percentage.  It would be an FHL dream sequence.

If no one has seen the FHL transactions lately, Danville traded MJ Graham's rights to NS Knights for the rights to Ludlow Harris Jr (very doubtful he will return). Then the next day NSK traded Graham's rights to Caolina for "FC".

"FC" is a dicey proposition with the FHL, who are always within a whisker of having no "F" ...

So, I'm always confused by the FHL.  Is this team like the Washington Generals of Harlem Globetrotters fame?  They travel around with other teams filling in schedule dates, and they are just entertainment fodder?

Generals >> Federals.  The Washington team actually recorded 3 wins vs. more than 17,000 losses in 65 years.  The Feds ain't got a snowball's chance in Barry Soskin's armpit to match ANY of those numbers.  I've always figured that the official temporary teams that the FHL has iced over the years - the Delaware Federals in 2011-12, and now the Northern Federals - were simply a way for Don Kirnan to spread out his declared tax losses for the generic jerseys the teams have worn.

Thunderbirds Break FHL Single Season Attendance Record

Winston-Salem, NC - The Carolina Thunderbirds are proud to announce that with the pre-sold tickets to Friday night's home game against the Port Huron Prowlers, the Thunderbirds now have the highest recorded attendance for a single Federal Hockey League regular season. The previous record was held by the now defunct Danbury Whalers, who set the mark during the 2012-2013 season with a total of 51,484 throughout 27 home games. The Thunderbirds, who play their 24th of 30 home games on Friday have 51,491 total attendance as of 1:02 PM EST, a full 5 and a half hours before the doors open at the Winston-Salem Fairgrounds Annex. Should the attendance continue on the same pace, the Thunderbirds will also hold the highest mark for average attendance, currently sitting at 2,184 per game. ...

Just checked FHL transactions (3-28-18).......North Shore has dismissed both head coaches and released all thier players. Sitting in last place with 18 pts and closest team having 57, looks like they are deciding not to stay in the league next year. Attendance was awful.....

According to the team website's schedule ticker, the Knights have officially forfeited their final three games of this season.  But I wouldn't count out some reincarnation of that team rising from the melted ice for 2018-19, especially with rumors starting to float a/b another FHL expansion for next season.  You can always count on Soskin & Kirnan & Old Sarge Richards to accelerate The Silly Season right to ...

Am I reading too much into that quote?

Quote

“There will definitely be a hockey team here next year and right now we are in the Federal Hockey League,” Brand said. “There are three expansion teams the league is looking at right now but that’s about all I can say.”

That seems like deliberate phrasing to say "a league change is possible" without actually saying it.
