Arena prepares for Birmingham Bulls

10 posts in this topic

Despite years of operating losses for the Pelham Civic Complex, it sounds like they are going all-in for the Birmingham Bulls.

PELHAM, Ala. — Talks are underway in Pelham about major renovations at the Civic Center's ice arena.

ABC 33/40 confirmed the city is planning to add 1,500 seats to accommodate hockey fans. Currently, the ice arena seats 3,500. Council President Rick Hayes told us the goal is to eventually have bowl-style seating that comes all the way up to the edge of the ice.

[...]

Hayes said there are still a lot of moving pieces, but he has no doubt the deal will be finalized soon. Hayes expects the return of hockey and the expansion of the ice arena to have a big impact on the surrounding area.

If the team's goal is to grow their franchise and ultimately move to the BJCC, this could be a bad investment.  Pelham could be on the hook for the renovations while finding themselves without their primary tenant in a few short years.  On the other hand, it might be an opportunity to address needed facility changes, plug the hole in the operating budget, and leave Pelham in a stronger position to attract other events afterwards.  In the meantime, the Frozen Tide would get to enjoy the upgrades, too.

Teams frequently try to convince taxpayers to front the money for new facilities with the lure of "local economic benefits."  It remains to be seen whether Pelham's bet will pay off.

I wouldn't know. We've never been in the same room at the same time. I've been told we could be twins, though.

Can't imagine why they would want to move to the BJCC. 5000 seats in Pelham were I would assume the rent will be about 1/10 the BJCC would be better I would think. Also UAB has a club team that plays there as well as UA.

Yes they do, every hockey event I have seen there has a full bar.

And lots of people locally remember the days of old when the ECHL team would pack out the BJCC and are hoping that this team can do it again, which is highly unlikely. But this is one of the largest markets in the league so I do not think that 5300 will be enough hopefully. I fully expect to average 4,128 year one which would be a sell out every game and 5000 year two which would be a near sell out. I expect 5-7 years down the line to see the team in either an unrecognizable Pelham Civic Center or on the verge of moving to the BJCC once again to join the rest of Birmingham Sports in revitalizing the Downtown area.

And then in Year 6-8, the Heavens will open, and a Multitude of Angels will descend upon Downtown Birmingham to take the Bulls & their Blessed Fans to The Divine Hockey Rink in the sky ... cloud9.gif

Yep, That is a best case scenario. But I think the most likely will be that the Pelham Civic Center will be unrecognizable and look like an actual arena. But with a likely USL team moving to Bham, renovations to Legacy Arena, and a new stadium going next to the BJCC anything is possible.
