Petition for Kevin Swider Pass

Recommended Posts

Nearly 4 years ago, the Ice Bears retired Kevin Swider's jersey to the rafters and talked about renaming the frontage road that runs along the South side of the Coliseum to Kevin Swider Lane. It's been discussed since (mostly on these Forums) and, finally, something is getting done about it.

The Ice Bears office has recently had conversation with the city and was told that the best way to make this happen would be to demonstrate to the city just how interested we are. To that end ....

There will be petitions available to sign at the Home Opener on Friday, October 27th.

Spread the word. Let's get as many names as we can on the petitions. Let's show the City of Knoxville how serious we are about our sport and about this tribute to Kevin's illustrious hockey career.

This is the shameful part of it.  They should never have trotted him out in front of fans, friends, and family on an emotional night and announced that without any sort of plan in place or even initiated discussions with the city at that point.

The city told me the best way to make it happen was to pay the $500 naming change fee and file an application...or even find a current sitting city commissioner to sponsor the change and they'd even waive the fee.  It sounds to me like the organization doesn't want to deal with the paperwork and/or money and is trying to put the blame on the fans if it doesn't go through.

"Well, we did ask you guys for signatures on this petition and, since not enough of you cared to sign it, the city isn't going to change the name...thanks a lot, fans, you let Kevin down!"

I'm sure attaching a petition to the paperwork wouldn't hurt, but apparently it's totally not necessary.  That said, if you go...sign it and get everyone you're with to sign it.   Any movement is good/positive movement at this point and the front office needs to be kept honest.

Or, we could all take the high road with a little positivity by getting behind this and spreading the word to try and get as many signatures as we can.

Who knows, it might also impress the city with how badly we want and deserve a new arena.

The Petition is now available for signing. It will be on the table across from the team merchandise stand until further notice. 2,000 signatures are needed, so get everyone you can to come sign it.

BTW, the official name of the stretch of road will be Kevin Swider Pass. (Get it?)

I’m at the game tonight with five people/signatures and no petition (or anything) at the table across from the merch stand.  The girl at Fan Assistance said the Booster Club table had it.  The Booster Club didn’t know anything about it other than it was supposed to be on the aforementioned table.  :(

The petition is now officially located at Fan Assistance in the main lobby (for real, this time).

If you haven't signed it yet, please do so. And bring a dozen friends to sign as well.
