Rivermen 2017-18 Transactions

Recommended Posts

Per the PJStar weekly report ...

Quote

The Peoria Rivermen sent the rights to defenseman Christian Weidauer to Huntsville on Saturday in exchange for defenseman Cody Smith.

Weidauer had been playing in a secondary league in France, and declined to return to Peoria this season. ...

The Rivermen got another boost Monday when winger Nick Miglio cleared ECHL waivers and returned from his 12-game call-up at Norfolk.

The Rivermen also got big winger Ryan Siiro back from his ECHL call-up at Colorado.

With Miglio and Siiro returning, defenseman Smith coming in via trade and goaltender Ryan De Melo acquired via trade with Pensacola for futures, the Rivermen had some roster clearing to do Monday.

They handled that by putting center Brandon Millin and goaltender Matt Leon on SPHL waivers. They’ll have to release another player Tuesday to make room for Siiro. ...

PEORIA — The Peoria Rivermen traded veteran winger Dakota Klecha in a four-player deal with Fayetteville as they continued to re-shape their roster Wednesday with their second trade in as many days.

The Rivermen sent Klecha and winger Nick Miglio to Fayetteville for veteran goaltender Peter Di Salvo and right wing Joe Kalisz.

Peoria then released goaltender Ryan de Melo and welcomed center Joe Widmar back from an ECHL call-up with Greenville. ...

A little roster change foreshadowing from Mr. Eminian ...

Quote

... The Rivermen have one area they clearly need to upgrade, though, as their defense unit continued to struggle. With three elite blueliners in Geoff Fortman, Nick Neville and Kevin Patterson gone for some time now on ECHL call-ups, Peoria is playing with a patchwork group on its back line.

The team had only four natural defensemen over the weekend. Natural forward Jordan Carvalho continued serving as a defenseman and played well there.

But at some point, probably soon, the Rivermen have to add some quality bodies there. Easier said than done. ...

Per Mr. Eminian's Friday a.m. River Readings ...

Quote

The Rivermen signed defenseman Stephen Gallo on Thursday. The 6-foot-2, 185-pound 27-year-old can also play up front. He played four years for NCAA Div.-III University of Southern Maine, and is in his third pro season. Most of his pro time has been logged in the low-A Federal Hockey League with Danbury and Watertown, but he has had SPHL stints with Pensacola, Knoxville, Evansville and Huntsville. ...

He is a good all around player, He is pretty quick and not afraid to get in the rough spots or drop the gloves. Not sure where they get 185lbs from but he is listed at 230lbs here?   Stand next to him and you will see.

Dunno.  185 lbs. is cited in both his Elite Prospects profile and in his hockeyDB profileThis FHL signing news item from last September lists him at 190 lbs.  Hard to believe he would've gained 40 pounds in 5 months.

word has it that they may be calling up one of the new goalies in the FHL on the Wolves team. Not sure why him as its his first year out of school and only played like 3 games against the last place team of the FHL?  Maybe just for backup i guess. Kinda Strange?

Per Dave Eminian's early-week River Readings ...

Quote

... Peoria lost goaltender Tyler Parks to call-up by ECHL Florida. The Rivermen are looking at several goaltending options to replace Parks, and will likely sign one on Tuesday.

It might serve as an organic way for veteran Peter Di Salvo to settle in as the No. 1 goaltender in Peoria. He is 2-0 since arriving via trade and has played like the elite goaltender the Rivermen expected.

The Rivermen have had seven goaltenders appear in games for them this season: Di Salvo, Parks, Eric Levine, Storm Phaneuf, Mike Santaguida, Ryan de Melo and Matt Leon. ...

Not so sure why?  They speak of his numbers but also fail to say he has only played like 3 games and all against the last place team in the FHL?  He very well may be a good goalie but has never been tested in the real world of even the FHL and being a young goalie looking for ice time why would he choose to go sit the bench for a higher league rather than stay somewhere and get some ice time?

Hope it works out for both but kinda strange?

Sometimes a coach in a higher league will do a fellow coach or a GM at a lower level a favor.  Could be repaying a previous favor (in their current jobs or previous ones) or setting up a future transaction. But with Trudel desperate for a backup, this kid might have been his only immediate choice. NOBODY wants to see Dave Eminian make an appearance as an EBUG.  :yikes:

Certainly, you want to get on the ice and play, but there's also simply the opportunity to get in front of another coach. You're hoping that guy will recognize your skill in practice and give you a shot in a game. Peoria has 3 games this weekend, so it's not impossible they'd let him crack the lineup.

It's not like you're going to go bring Leon back.
