SMG proposal to upgrade Pensacola Bay Center gets chilly reception

By Jim Little - News Journal

Quote

A plan by the Pensacola Bay Center's management company to save the venue instead of building a new arena drew a chilly response from the Escambia County Commission on Tuesday.

County staff presented the proposal from SMG, the Bay Center's management company, to the County Commission at its Committee of the Whole meeting Tuesday.

SMG proposed two different scenarios to upgrade the Bay Center.

One scenario would cost $2.25 million and would add office space and other facilities to bring the arena up to NBA standards to host a potential G League team.

The other scenario is for $10 million and includes the NBA improvements and a new ice plant and other upgrades for the Ice Flyers hockey team, as well as enhancements to the acoustics of the building, concessions and other changes.

The plan was prepared in response to a proposal for a new arena and field house presented to the commission in October by a group seven of companies — organized by Pensacola businessman Jay Patel — called Hunt/ICC/VenuWorks or the Hunt Group.

The County Commission has said financing the potentially $65 million to $90 million project would dependent on the Hunt Group successfully winning a $25 million grant from Triumph Gulf Coast and obtaining new market tax credits, although no final vote on the project has been taken.

The county supported the $25 million request to Triumph in October.

SMG proposed using $25 million in Triumph funds to upgrade the Bay Center and spending the rest on building the field house aspect of the project, which aims to draw youth sport tournaments to the area.

Seems fair enough, but from what i have read, the PBC is deteriorating and would need to be replaced anyways.

Makes me wonder if the County Commissioners are secretly hoping the next Gulf hurricane blows the Bay Center into Alabama, so they can collect the insurance money & use it as TIF funding to attract a Walmart in its place.

Maybe we don't want the Bay Center in Alabama in the condition it's in right now.
