Ice Flyers fast start, strong defense fades in overtime loss at Roanoke

News Journal staff

The return of Ice Flyers goaltender Gordon Defiel resulted in his toughest night.

Defiel, named the SPHL player of the month for his sensational play in December, yielded four goals in regulation play, then two more in an overtime shootout, as the Ice Flyers lost 5-4 Friday against the Roanoke Rail Yard Dawgs at the Berglund Center in Roanoke, Virginia.

The win gave Roanoke (8-14-3) one of its best wins of the season and the loss was among the roughest for the Ice Flyers (17-5-2) who entered as the SPHL's first-place team.

The Ice Flyers lost despite outshooting Roanoke 50-29 in the game. The two teams will play again in Roanoke on Saturday night.
