Rivermen fall 3-2 in Birmingham Friday

Pelham, AL – The Peoria Rivermen fought to erase a 2-0 second-period deficit before surrendering a late power-play goal and falling 3-2 to the Birmingham Bulls at the Pelham Civic Complex Friday night. The loss keeps the Rivermen in second place in the SPHL, three points shy of league-leading Pensacola with two games remaining on Peoria’s current road trip.

Rivermen stunned by second loss to expansion Bulls, 3-2

Dave Eminian - Journal Star sports reporter

The Peoria Rivermen gave a gift to the rest of the elite teams in a tight SPHL race Friday.

The second-place Rivermen lost — again — to a ninth-place expansion Birmingham Bulls team. For Peoria’s opponents, it was like finding $100 while cleaning out their garage in a race in which five teams were separated by five points heading into the weekend.

The Rivermen had nine power plays, out-shot Birmingham 44-25 and lost on a power-play goal with just 2:14 left in the game to absorb a 3-2 defeat before 2,047 at Pelham Civic Complex in Birmingham, Ala.

It burns to see the Bulls beat the Rivermen for a second time. Especially because they virtually beat no one else.
