Eminian: Rivermen defense trending, another goaltender gone, and a $10,000 jersey

PEORIA — Defensive play has been the trademark of Peoria Rivermen teams that have dominated the SPHL since their inception in 2013-14.

Peoria head coach Jean-Guy Trudel’s commitment to defending is not negotiable.

But since the calendar turned to 2018, the Rivermen have allowed goals at a per game average of 3.90 over an 11-game stretch.

They have allowed four or more goals in five of those 11 games.

In their first 23 games of the season, the Rivermen yielded an average of just 2.61 goals per game and held opponents to one goal or less eight times — something they haven’t achieved in the 11 games since Jan. 1.

“It could be a lot of things, we have some new guys who’ve come into the team, our goaltending has changed and changed and changed,” Trudel said. “But we know it’s an issue right now and we’re going to look at it this week and see what can be fixed. We shouldn’t be giving up the type of chances that we have been.”

The Rivermen are still second in the league in defensive average, but their 2.94 rate is the highest they’ve ever allowed in their five seasons in the league. ...
