Knoxville Ice Bears need 3 overtimes (109 minutes) to eliminate Pensacola Ice Flyers

After more than 100 minutes of hockey, Zoltan Hetenyi was numb.

The Knoxville Ice Bears goalie lost track of the magnitude of the ultimate prize, a sweep over Pensacola in the Challenge Round of the Southern Professional Hockey League playoffs on Saturday night at the Civic Coliseum. He completely ignored the fact that he had been perfect in more than 49 minutes of a sudden-death situation.

All that mattered was the next play coming in his direction.

Hetenyi was marvelous, stopping 46 of the Ice Flyers’ 49 shots on goal, setting the stage for Lawrence Cornellier to drill home the winner on a nifty pass from Charlie Granath in Knoxville’s 4-3 triple-overtime victory.

The game, which lasted 109 minutes and 1 second (5 hours and 4 minutes actual elapsed time), was a little over three minutes shy of the longest game ever in SPHL history. Cornellier’s game-winner was scored at 12:39 a.m. EDT.
