The return trip from heartbreak brought the Pensacola Ice Flyers back to the Bay Center at mid-morning Sunday.

Jeff Bes had tossed and turned with little sleep in nine or so hours, going through all the what-if moments a coach can imagine from a triple-overtime loss. Either as player or coach, he had never been involved in a game that long, or any with that kind of empty feeling.

So he headed to a nearby Starbucks with team owner Greg Harris. The next two hours were spent planning for next season, which brought the best kind of solace.

The biggest takeaway for the Ice Flyers is the position they enter into the summer. For the first time in three years, Harris is not looking for a new coach, or uncertain about the return of the current coach.

Bes is coming back. And he won't be far away. Along with his wife and young children, the family home is in Biloxi.

You don’t have to recruit. Most players want to play here. The beach sells itself. You do have to coach though, which did not happen this season. Next.......
