Rivermen surrender four third-period goals in Game 1 loss to Havoc

April 26, 2018

12:56 AM EDT

Peoria, IL – The Peoria Rivermen saw a 4-1 second-period lead vanish Wednesday night as they gave up four third-period goals en route to a 6-5 loss the Huntsville Havoc in Game 1 of the President’s Cup Finals. The loss puts the Rivermen into a must-win situation when the Best-of-3 series resumes Friday night in Huntsville. ...

Clearly a case of the continuing favoritism shown to Huntsville by the League offices ...  :hmm::unsure:  :banghead:

I reiterate - Peoria needed a TO when the score went to 4-3.
That's on Trudel.

Fading in the second and collapsing in the 3rd?
That's on the team. (except for Gorman - he was laying it out)

Two periods of flat-out hockey when you're down 3 goals? That's just a fantastic effort on the part of the Huntsville team. This is a tremendous failure on the part of the Rivermen but only because of such a tremendous effort on the part Huntville. Down 3-1 with 37 minutes left to play. they trailed by two for the next 29 minutes. The Havoc gave an outstanding effort for those 29 minutes WITHOUT PAYOFF until eventually it DID pay off.

My hope is that the Rivermen can steal a win Friday to bring this back to Peoria on Sunday. They either respond for 60 minutes or they don't (and the season is over).

Here is my post-game recap of the epic meltdown (or epic comeback, depending on your POV)

I blame that on the League, too: They neglected to send a copy of the Coach of the Year manual to J-GT.

Thank you for your in-game play-by-play.

It's interesting to me that Trudel refused to take the early time-out when it was apparent that Big Mo was swinging the other way.  From a complete outsider, that appears to be a pretty serious error.  Still a lot of hockey to be played.
