PEORIA — Has the shock worn off yet?

The Peoria Rivermen were on a bus to Huntsville 90 minutes after throwing away Game 1 of the SPHL President’s Cup Finals late Wednesday night.

Thursday was a day for healing. If such a thing can happen for a franchise that is now 0-6 in championship round games in the SPHL and in its third consecutive Finals trip.

The Rivermen -- runaway winners of the regular-season points title in the SPHL -- face elimination in front of what will likely be a sellout crowd in Huntsville when Game 2 of the best-of-3 series arrives Friday. ...

(Rivermen head coach Jean-Guy Trudel said,) “People will question whether our team has the heart that Huntsville’s has, and that’s fair. But we’ll be prepared Friday.

“Either we execute and play with heart to the last second, or we’ll be watching another team celebrate again.” ...

End of the 1st Period, PEO 2 - HSV 1.  Go-ahead goal by Alec Hagaman.  Still too close to call, Rivermen need to get more time in the o-zone & more pucks on net.

To the victors go the game summaries ... Rivermen Calm Havoc, Force Game 3

Quote

The Peoria Rivermen scored 1:25 into the contest and never trailed Friday night in Huntsville, earning a 3-2 win to force a decisive Game 3 in the President’s Cup Finals. With the win, the Rivermen force a winner-take-all game Sunday at 4:15 PM in Carver Arena. ...

(Peoria netminder Tyler) Parks and the Rivermen defense staved off an extra-attacker flurry in the final two minutes of regulation to hold the 3-2 score until the final buzzer. Parks stopped 32 of 34 shots faced, including 25 of 26 in the final two periods to earn the win in goal. With the win, Parks improves to 5-1 in the postseason.

Notes: The win is Peoria’s first ever in the President’s Cup Finals, in their third straight trip to the finale…Peoria will look to become the first team in SPHL history to win the President’s Cup after failing to win Game 1 of the finals…

Not. Dead. Yet.

Peoria Rivermen captain Dave Pszenyczny lay face down on the ice, exhausted, while Justin Greenberg piled on in an emotional celebration as the final horn sounded.

“I shouted some things to him, that are perfect for the moment,” Greenberg said, laughing. “What do you call them, expletives? Can’t repeat it here.”

Huntsville fans held their hands on their heads behind the Peoria net in dismay while the red-clad Rivermen swarmed around their goaltender, Tyler Parks.

The Rivermen dodged elimination and tied the best-of-3 SPHL President’s Cup Finals, 1-1 on Friday.

“We’re still alive,” said Rivermen head coach Jean-Guy Trudel, via phone, after a playoff road win that will be hailed in Peoria’s long franchise history. “A lot of people wrote us off. But our guys came down here, beat that team, survived that crowd and that energy and got it done.

“We’re coming home with a chance to win a championship.” ...
