PEORIA — This is how losing the championship on your home ice sounds.

You could hear the Huntsville Havoc living up to their nickname, flinging their sticks and gloves and helmets in the air, knocking the north goal at Carver Arena off its moorings and scrumming their happy dance.

There was nothing to drown out their joy Sunday after beating the Peoria Rivermen, 4-2, in every phase of the game to win the President’s Cup, symbol of the SPHL championship.

Rivermen fans politely applauded their homeboys, who skated in dejected circles for a couple of minutes before trudging off the rink and disappearing into another empty offseason. But the clapping was no match for the screeching Havoc, and when Jon Kalisz got off his knees and headed to the locker room, the last Riverman to yield to reality, the fans vanished, too.

So the happy whooping of the visitors from Alabama echoed through Carver Arena, punctuated by a handful of their traveling fans who banged on the glass and rang cowbells. ...
