Rivermen, fans, ‘Believed’ during magnificent 2017-18 journey that fell short

PEORIA — In the quiet emptiness of Carver Arena, two hours after the 2017-18 SPHL season ended in heartbreak for the Peoria Rivermen last week, fans had left behind a large home-made sign on the lower bowl seats.

It sat there, propped just below the vast wall of banners and retired numbers for the Rivermen franchise hanging on the arena wall above.

“We Believe” it read. And then, by game’s end, some one had scrawled between those words “are trying to.”

The Rivermen had a magnificent season, running over the SPHL on the way to the league points title for the third time in four years and gaining the President’s Cup Finals for an unprecedented third straight season.

And then a devastating loss in the Finals, for a third straight season.
