Time to stop the posturing, debating and come up with answer to Bay Center woes

By Bill Vilona - News Journal

Quote

In two public meetings, morning and night, held Thursday by the Escambia County Commission, the thorny arena issue was again the agenda albatross.

There were a combined hours of discussion, input, debate, and unease when this item hit its turn.

Because, well, this is sort of a big deal.

But when it became vote time, the commissioners voted to do nothing.  Again.

It was so Pensacola... governing style.

Even when board chairman Jeff Bergosh, who repeatedly tried to remind his peers they were only voting to let an investor group proceed toward a proposal without any commitment and no financial liability, that didn't matter.

An election season looms and everyone is running for cover.

So what better cover than to kick the can down the street again. Because as we all know, nothing solves problems better than meetings to schedule meetings.

Not so much an albatross as it is the elephant in the (meeting) room.  And the Escambia Co. commissioners are clearly afraid of elephants.

Could also be an albatross: a seemingly inescapable moral or emotional burden of guilt or responsibility that impedes action or progress, sometimes used metaphorically to mean a psychological burden that feels like a curse.

Not really- they did have the GOP rally there (an event which totally screwed up playing dates for the Ice Flyers).

For a net capital (and political) loss, I believe.

Pensacola is the county seat of Escambia County, Florida, which swung Republican by more than 20 percentage points in the 2016 Presidential election.  So there was no political loss involved in that particular facility decision.
