Hockey in the Quad-Cities will live to see another day.

The TaxSlayer Center announced Tuesday afternoon it is hosting a news conference Wednesday at 12:15 p.m. According to TaxSlayer executive director Scott Mullen, the press conference will announce that a hockey team has been established for the 2018-19 season, the 23rd straight season of hockey in the Quad-Cities.

Mullen did not indicate what league the team would be in but the likeliest option is the Southern Professional Hockey League.

SPHL commissioner Jim Combs is here, so that settles it. The new team will be a member of the SPHL, which was a 10-team league until now. Peoria the closest team in the league.

SPHL adding Quad City for 2018-2019 season

Quote

HUNTERSVILLE, NC (May 23, 2018) – The Southern Professional Hockey League (SPHL) today announced that it will be expanding to Moline, IL, whose team will take to the ice as Quad City for the 2018-2019 season.

At a press conference held this afternoon at the TaxSlayer Center, league president Jim Combs stated that the SPHL Board of Governors this week approved the Louisiana IceGators’ majority transfer of ownership to Red Sky Sports, LLC.

In partnership with the TaxSlayer Center, the team will be headed by local owners John Dawson and Ryan Mosley, co-owner of the Harris Pizza business. Howard Cornfield, longtime owner, team president and general manager of the original Quad City Mallards, will serve as a consultant to the new SPHL franchise.

“The SPHL is excited to welcome Quad City as a new member for next season,” stated SPHL President Jim Combs. “We look forward bringing an exciting brand of hockey to long-time fans in the area.”

For information on the new Quad City franchise, including ticket and sponsorship information and a Name the Team contest, check out the league’s website at www.thesphl.com.

As Speedracer alluded, I wouldn't take this "(Guess-what-we're-gonna) Name-the-team contest" too seriously.  It's simply a tried & true marketing gimmick.  I'm confident the new owners have a short-list already, and will consult with the rest of their senior staff once they are hired.  Not much time to get this puck rolling in QDC for puck drop in October, so they've gotta get a fan base repatriated & re-energized any way they can.

I say go with the "Mighty Ducks" for the (Guess-what-we're-gonna) Name-the-team contest!

Well, besides the obvious Disney aspect, it's quite possible the Rockford IceHogs retained some ownership rights to that hockey team name when they purchased the AHL's former Cincinnati Mighty Ducks franchise back in 2007.  This whole naming-the-team business is filled with modern & historical potholes.

What are the streets like in Moline? Perhaps the QC Potholes?

They have their share of pavement challenges, considering the winter weather conditions.  I'll let you know how the repairs are coming along when me 'n' Mrs. JMC spend an extended weekend up there in August.

Let's "go there"
Moline is the home of John Deere.
There is the Rock Island Arsenal.
There is, of course the river, although the Arena Football team is the Steamwheelers
Agriculture is, of course, prominent.
