Shannon Szabados signs with NWHL's Buffalo Beauts

Shannon Szabados has never been the one to shy away from a challenge.

Szabados broke the Southern Professional Hockey League's gender barrier in 2014, and even participated in an Edmonton Oilers practice session. After spending the past five seasons in the SPHL, the two-time Olympic gold medalist plans to make her mark in the National Women's Hockey League (NWHL).

On Wednesday, Szabados signed with the Buffalo Beauts of the NWHL. It's her first professional women's hockey contract.

"This is a monumental signing for our team and for the NWHL, and we cannot wait to see Shannon in a Beauts jersey," Buffalo general manager Nik Fattey said in a release. "Her international pedigree and unprecedented success in men’s leagues demonstrate the quality play she’ll bring to our crease this season.”

"After spending the past five seasons in the SPHL ..."?  Had to check the dateline of that SN article.  Can someone here remind me which SPHL team Shannon played for in 2017-18?

Per eliteprospects.com: the last SPHL team she played for was the Rivermen- lasted a whole 2 games before the Trudel goalie purge of '16

Apparently, she picked Buffalo because it is close to Ohio, where she and her boyfriend moved back to: A move to Ohio brought Shannon Szabados to the Buffalo Beauts

There are F(P)HL teams closer to Ohio:

Teams currently in the FHL
Team First season Home arena Capacity City
Carolina Thunderbirds 2017 Winston-Salem Fairgrounds Annex 4,000 Winston-Salem, North Carolina
Danville Dashers 2011 David S. Palmer Arena 2,350 Danville, Illinois
North Shore Knights 2016 Kingsville Arena Complex 1,300 Kingsville, Ontario
Port Huron Prowlers 2015 McMorran Place 3,400 Port Huron, Michigan
Watertown Wolves 2010 Watertown Municipal Arena 2,000 Watertown, New York

??? Only if it's western Ohio.

And why would she want to play in that league?

She chose Buffalo over any other NWHL or Canadian Women's Hockey League team.

Buffalo was an obvious choice for the 31-year-old because it’s only a three-hour drive from Ohio.

That she'd qualify for (ECHL, AHL, NHL)? Or want to bother with (FHL)?

At least her relationship can't be toxic in the Beauts' room... at least, it shouldn't.

Don't bet on it.  For a variety of reasons.
