HUNTERSVILLE, NC (July 6, 2018) – The Southern Professional Hockey League (SPHL) announced on Friday that it will drop the puck for its 15th anniversary season on Friday, October 19 with four games scheduled.

The Fayetteville Marksmen welcome the Roanoke Rail Yard Dawgs to the Crown Coliseum in the first game of the 2018-2019 season. The same night, the Knoxville Ice Bears host the Evansville Thunderbolts while the Pensacola Ice Flyers travel to Macon to take on the Mayhem. Birmingham closes out the opening night schedule as the Bulls play host to the Huntsville Havoc.

The league’s newest member, the Quad City Storm, headline the first Saturday of the season as they host their in-state rival, the Peoria Rivermen. Granted, I haven’t followed the SPHL since the beginning, but is this this first season in which every team won’t appear at least once in every building?

First time i've ever seen Roanoke not have a home game against 2 of the teams in the league. Never seen a team not have atleast one home game versus another team in the league.  This is our third year in the league and have to say by far this is the worst scheduling i've ever seen.

IIRC, this has been true in season's past, especially when there was an odd number of teams or when the League expanded north.  The latter may be a contributing reason this coming season for an unbalanced schedule, with an attempt to maximize Quad City-Peoria-Evansville pairings,  Such a change tends to ripple through to affect the rest of the match-ups.  There are only 25 weekends in the regular season to shuffle the schedule puzzle tiles among.

Shouldn't have been any worse than when Peoria and Bloomington joined - with no Evansville to bridge the gap. Y'all played each other a lot, but the rest of the league was fairly well balanced (in a weighted sort of way).

"(in a weighted sort of way)" is the very condition that gets some fans' trousers in a bunch.  :happens:

Until we go to divisions, the schedules have to be weighted based on proximity.

Fayetteville plays 3 games in 3 nights against Pensacola, then does it again the following weekend. 6 straight games against each other.

It's too bad Bloomington still isn't in the league.  They were a good rivalry with our team too when they were the Mallards.
