Wayne Gretzky named ambassador for pro hockey team in China

By Harman Dayal - dailyhive.com

If anybody can sell hockey in China it’s probably Wayne Gretzky.

The Great One has been named global ambassador for the Kunlun Red Star, the only Chinese team playing in the KHL. The team is preparing for its third season playing in Shanghai, though they have plans to move to a new arena in Beijing before the end of the year.

In addition, Gretzky will partner with the Red Star organization to open high-level hockey schools for players aged 8-17 in Shenzhen and Beijing by September.

Both initiatives hope to increase participation and fanfare for hockey ahead of the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing.

“Having Wayne Gretzky on board is a tremendous boost for hockey in China,” said Ao Meng, Executive Director of the Red Star. “Gretzky’s contributions to the game is incalculable. To now have him be a part of the growth of hockey in China, and the host nation of the 2022 Winter Olympics, will only further the interest and participation of the sport, especially amongst the youth in the country.”

Gretzky named global ambassador for Beijing Kunlun Red Star

Associated Press

BEIJING — Wayne Gretzky has been named a global ambassador for Beijing’s Kunlun Red Star as the Chinese capital seeks to boost the profile of hockey domestically ahead of hosting the Winter Olympics in 2022.

Gretzky will focus on youth development in China, including a planned KRS-Gretzky Hockey School that will provide advanced training for players aged 8-17 in Beijing and the southern tech hub of Shenzhen, eventually expanding to at least 20 locations nationwide.

Red Star is China’s only professional team and plays in the Russia-based Kontinental Hockey League.

China is seeking to boost hockey in a country where winter sports participation remains in its infancy.

The official China Daily newspaper quoted Red Star’s Executive Director Ao Meng as saying Gretzky’s involvement would be a "tremendous boost."

Gretzky helping to grow hockey in China

Will run youth camps ahead of preseason games in Beijing, Shenzhen

Wayne Gretzky is helping to promote the growth of hockey in China ahead of the 2018 O.R.G. NHL China Games, when the Calgary Flames and Boston Bruins will play preseason games Sept. 15 (Shenzhen) and 19 (Beijing).

Gretzky was named a global ambassador for Kunlun Red Star, China's team in the Kontinental Hockey League. He'll help with a youth development and training program for players ages 8-17 in Beijing and Shenzhen, with the goal of expanding to at least 20 locations in China.

"The Chinese people have really rallied around hockey," Gretzky said Wednesday at the Hlinka Gretzky Cup in Edmonton. "Somebody told me that last year, Game 6 (of the Stanley Cup Final) between [the] Pittsburgh [Penguins] and Nashville [Predators] had 36 million people in China that watched ... so it shows you the size of the market in China is pretty amazing."
