Ice Flyers readjust on fly after Hurricane Michael

By Bill Vilona - News Journal

The Pensacola Ice Flyers will be able to begin training camp with little delay after Hurricane Michael impacted the Panama City area and the effects on Pensacola were minimal.

The Ice Flyers were scheduled to start practices Wednesday, but the Pensacola Bay Center was instead needed as a hurricane shelter. The cancellation of the Kevin Hart performance Thursday may allow the Ice Flyers to begin before Friday.

Their preseason game scheduled for 7 p.m. Saturday against the Birmingham Bulls will go on as scheduled with free admission. The Ice Flyers open the regular season Oct. 19 on the road against the Macon (Ga.) Mayhem.

"We will still have a full week leading up to next weekend," Ice Flyers owner Greg Harris said. "We don't need to be down to 19 players (opening-game roster) until next Wednesday, so we have time."

Harris met with players on Tuesday. The team passed out food and drink supplies in case the storm had turned closer to Pensacola and power was lost.

"I got them all prepared, got them information that they can pass on to their family and friends, just to help reassure them. because no one is from the area," Harris said. "So there has been some uneasiness. with them and their families."
