Standout Netminders Phaneuf, Pulde, Return to Rivermen Crease

Phaneuf led all SPHL goaltenders with 2.06 GAA in 2016-17

Peoria, IL – The Peoria Rivermen announced today that the team has signed goaltenders Storm Phaneuf and Mason Pulde to professional tryout agreements for this October’s training camp. Phaneuf returns to the Rivermen after missing most of last season with injury, while Pulde comes back to Peoria after earning SPHL Warrior Player of the Month honors last March/April.

Phaneuf, 22, began his pro career with the Rivermen in 2016-17, a season that saw him lead all SPHL netminders with a 2.06 goals-against average and earn SPHL All-Rookie honors before leading Peoria to the President’s Cup Finals. The Gatineau, QC native began last season with the ECHL’s Rapid City Rush, playing in five games before returning to Peoria in mid-December.

“We’re excited to get Storm back for training camp this year,” said Rivermen head coach Jean-Guy Trudel. He’s been rehabbing and working very hard since his injury and having him back is going to huge for our goaltending situation. His ability to play the puck is outstanding, and he’s a great guy to have around the locker room as well.”

Pulde, 24, returns to Peoria after joining the Rivermen from FHL Watertown last February, going 6-1-1 with a 1.44 GAA and a .956 save percentage in 10 outings down the stretch, earning Warrior SPHL Player of the Month honors for March/April along the way. The Tufts University product began his pro career with the Federal Hockey League’s Watertown Wolves last season, going 3-0-0 with a 2.06 GAA and a .925 saves rate before joining the Rivermen Feb. 6.

“We’re glad to get Mason back into the fold for this season,” said Trudel. “He came on strong at the end of last season, his work ethic was second to none, and he really carried us for a while there in the month of March. Seeing the amount of time he puts in on the practice rink every day was really inspiring to all of us.”

Phaneuf and Pulde become the third and fourth goaltenders to sign with the Rivermen for this season’s training camp, joining Braeden Ostepchuk and Aaron Taylor. The Rivermen will open training camp in early October prior to their Oct. 13 preseason contest against Quad City at Carver Arena. Single-game tickets for all 2018-19 Rivermen home games will go on sale October 1 at 10 AM, and season and group tickets are available now by calling the Rivermen office at 309-676-1040.

Peoria, IL – The Peoria Rivermen announced Tuesday that the team has signed wingers Joe Kalisz and Tommy Mahoney to professional tryout agreements for this October’s training camp. Kalisz returns to the Rivermen after joining Peoria from Fayetteville via trade last January, while Mahoney began his pro career late last season with the Marksmen, suiting up for nine games after concluding his amateur career at Assumption College.

Kalisz, 27, enters his third pro season after joining Peoria via trade January 24, finishing the campaign with 10 goals and seven assists in 27 games for the Rivermen. The Davison, MI native went on to post three goals and two assists during Peoria’s run to the President’s Cup Finals, logging all of those points during Games 1 & 3 of the finale with Huntsville.

“Getting Joe back and having him up front will be huge for our offense this year,” said Rivermen head coach Jean-Guy Trudel. “He is a threat to score from any spot on the ice, and his puck handling skills in small areas creates problems for opposing defenses.”

Mahoney, 23, comes to Peoria after beginning his pro career last season with the Fayetteville Marksmen, skating in nine games after he wrapped up a four-year stint at NCAA Division-III Assumption College in Worcester, MA. While at Assumption, the Braintree, MA native logged 68 points in 102 career games, including 27 points in 27 outings while serving as team captain during the 2017-18 campaign.

The additions of Kalisz and Mahoney bring Peoria’s training camp roster to 17 players, with more signings expected to be announced before the Rivermen open training camp in early October. All training camp practices will be open to the public, with a full schedule of practice dates at Carver Arena and Owens Center to be announced at a later date.

Peoria, IL – The Peoria Rivermen announced today that the team has signed goaltender Greg Dodds, defenseman Jake Flegel, and winger Vincent Beaudry to professional tryout contracts for this October’s training camp. Dodds and Flegel both saw action in the SPHL and ECHL last season, while Beaudry embarks on his pro career after playing his final junior hockey season with the Whitecourt Wolverines and Drayton Valley Thunder of the Alberta Junior Hockey League.

Dodds, 25, comes to Peoria after splitting last season between four teams, seeing action 11 times in the SPHL for Pensacola and Macon, and suiting up for nine ECHL games for Indy and Greenville. In his 11 SPHL outings, Dodds went 7-1-0 with a combined 2.13 goals-against average and a .932 save percentage.

“We’re happy to get Dodds signed on for training camp this year,” said Rivermen head coach Jean-Guy Trudel. “He’s a big body goaltender with a high compete level, and we saw him put up great numbers and play well against us last season, he’s going to be another high-caliber goaltender competing for a spot on our roster this October.”

Flegel, 26, comes to the Rivermen after spending each of the last three seasons in the SPHL with Knoxville, earning ECHL stints last season with Brampton and Cincinnati, totaling 12 ECHL games with a goal and an assist. In his SPHL career, Flegel has skated in 115 regular-season contests, notching four goals and 34 assists to go with 216 penalty minutes and a +13 rating.

“Jake is a big body who can bring size and toughness to our defense this year,” said Trudel. “He was Knoxville’s captain last year, so he brings leadership experience that will add to our team off the ice as well.”

Beaudry, 21, joins the Rivermen after finishing his junior career last season in the AJHL, tallying 20 goals and 41 assists over the course of 50 games for the Whitecourt Wolverines and Drayton Valley Thunder. In his junior career, the Montmagny, QC native has also seen action in seven QMJHL contests and posted four points in eight games for the SJHL’s Melfort Mustangs last year before transitioning to the AJHL.

Wednesday’s trio of signings bring Peoria’s training camp roster to 20 players, with more signings expected to be announced before the Rivermen open training camp in early October. All training camp practices will be open to the public, with a full schedule of practice dates at Carver Arena and Owens Center to be announced at a later date.

Coach Trudel refuses to relive the turmoil that Shannon Szabados brought to his locker room two seasons ago.  So if he signs a bunch of goalies, there won't be enough locker space left for her to sneak back in with her gear.
