Preview: Mayhem vs. Pensacola Ice Flyers

Mayhem Kick Off their Fourth Season in Mac-Town
After bringing Macon its first championship in history in 2017, the Mayhem had great expectations surrounding them last season. They certainly did not disappoint, earning 2nd place in the entire SPHL and rolling past the Evansville Thunderbolts to advance to the semi-finals. Unfortunately, their hopes to repeat as champions were dashed in overtime by the eventual President’s Cup Champions, the Huntsville Havoc.

With such a remarkable season coming to such an abrupt end, the Mayhem have returned to Macon loaded for bear, prepared to undertake the challenges the upcoming season has to offer. With newly appointed Head Coach Leo Thomas at the helm, a fourth season will be underway tonight in Macon. Many of those who were responsible for the team's previous successes--Coach Thomas included--have returned for another chapter in this organization’s growing history. Tonight is when their newest chapter begins.

The Matchup
The Pensacola Ice Flyers have been a force to be reckoned with for years. They entered the postseason last year with an identical record to Macon’s, 33-16-7. With high expectations heading into the playoffs as well, the Flyers were upset by the Knoxville Ice Bears and swept in the first round. Macon managed to generate considerable success against Pensacola last season, attaining a 6-3-0 record against them.

Pensacola has ranked third-place or higher in the standings in four of the last five seasons, most of which have been under the tutelage of Head Coach Rod Aldoff. Aldoff reassumes his role as the Ice Flyers’ head coach after a two-year hiatus when he was a scout for the Edmonton Oilers of the NHL. He has a proven record of success and is well-respected by Leo Thomas, who will be making his head coaching debut tonight for the Mayhem with a President’s Cup Championship already on his resumé.

Ruby’s Return
An enormous lift to the team’s confidence and spirits heading into the upcoming season is the return of goaltender Jordan Ruby to Macon. Ruby was the Mayhem’s starting goaltender when the team won the championship two years ago, but spent last season in France playing in the Fédération Francaise de Hockey sur Glace. When in Macon, Ruby ranked 2nd in the SPHL in wins (21), third in Goals Against Average (2.32) and second in Save Percentage (.925). His return to the fold, combined with the addition of former Pensacola goaltender Gordon Defiel, makes for a formidable tandem in net which is poised to be one of the strongest duos in the SPHL this season.

Macon Music Night / Pucks & Paws Night
A unique promotion will be on hand at each and every Mayhem home game throughout the 2018-19 season. Tonight’s promotion is Macon Music Night, where The Creek FM (100.9) will be joining the Mayhem in the stadium, helping contribute to Macon’s musical history with favorite hits throughout the night. Pucks & Paws night will take place tomorrow night against Fayetteville. Fans are encouraged to bring their dogs to the game, but will be kindly asked to keep them on a leash and sign a waiver prior to entering the arena.
