PEORIA — Jim Steveson walked in to the Peoria Rivermen offices a few weeks ago.

“I wanted to say goodbye in my own voice,” said the longtime fan as he visited with team co-owner Bart Rogers. “One last cheer in my own voice.”

Steveson is legendary among Rivermen fans, a supreme heckler in his prime whose witty lines could be heard pouring from the grandstand onto referees throughout the team’s IHL, ECHL, AHL and SPHL eras.

He’ll never do that again.

Steveson won’t be there Friday when the Rivermen host Fayetteville.

Instead, he’ll be in surgery.

“They are going to remove my vocal chords,” said Steveson, straining to speak. “Cancer. I had 28 treatments, but the cancer came back in September.

“I can’t yell at Rivermen games anymore. I’ll never be able to do that again.” ...
