Hockey Hall of Famer Andreychuk part of Tampa Bay Lightning's Pensacola impact

By Bill Vilona - News Journal

Quote

Dave Andreychuk, a member of the Hockey Hall of Fame, had a familiar sight as he walked around the Pensacola Bay Center.

"Wow, there are a lot of Tampa Bay Lightning jerseys (on fans) in here," he told Pensacola Ice Flyers owner Greg Harris during his appearance last Friday.

The Lightning connection is likely to get stronger after the team visited 10 schools in Escambia and Santa Rosa County in five days last week.

The "Lightning Street Team", handed out more than 2,500 hockey sticks, street hockey balls and T-shirts.

Andreychuk, 55, former Lightning team captain and first to hoist the Stanley Cup in Tampa Bay's dramatic 2004 championship, visited Chumuckla Elementary School. He saw many kids last Friday who had never held a hockey stick suddenly learn the sport.

"It was really fun," he said. "Kids who really don't know the game of hockey and to be able to give them a stick, have some fun and let them realize it's a pretty cool sport."
