Monarchs pull the plug on professional hockey in Manchester

By MARK HAYWARD

New Hampshire Union Leader

The Manchester Monarchs, who drew professional hockey fans to the Queen City the last 18 years, announced Wednesday the team will cease operations.

A press released issued by the Monarchs does not specify when the organization will fold, but the team recently finished its 2018-19 season. The Monarchs started in Manchester as the AHL affiliate of the Los Angeles Kings when the city-owned arena -- now named the SNHU Arena -- opened in 2001.

:hmm: Manchester is in southern New Hampshire. And only an 11 hour drive from the nearest SPHL team.

Interesting that Manchester dropped one level (AHL to ECHL) and their attendance plummeted.

Peoria dropped two levels (AHL to SPHL) and, while their attendance took a hit, they are still a going concern.

So what's the difference between the two franchises?  Just a much pickier fanbase in Manchester?

Helpful to note that Manchester's AHL attendance had already plunged long before their ECHL attendance cratered.

From what I've seen it might be a combination of pickiness and not wanting a lower level of play and potential disillusion with the front office.
