ECHL’s Kelly Cup was never returned by Colorado

ECHL’s Kelly Cup was never returned by Colorado

By Dave Eminian - Journal Star

The Kelly Cup appears to be held hostage.

The historic trophy, named in honor of former Peoria Rivermen head coach Pat Kelly, who went on to co-found the ECHL and serve as its commissioner from 1989-1996, is in the possession of the Colorado Eagles.

The Eagles are not in the ECHL anymore.

Colorado was a repeat winner of the Kelly Cup in 2018, and moved up to the American Hockey League for the 2018-19 season. They won’t be back. And apparently neither will the trophy.

Pat Kelly went on a radio show this week in Toledo and announced that Colorado never returned the trophy to the ECHL. He says the league has made a new one for the 2019 playoffs.

It is tradition, of course, for the reigning champion to return the Cup to the league at the start of the next postseason.

Kelly said a confirmed plan with Eagles management to return the Kelly Cup to the league last December was not honored by the team.

Colorado Eagles still have Kelly Cup after leaving ECHL to move to AHL

By Kevin Lytle - Fort Collins Coloradoan

The Colorado Eagles are in a bizarre social media storm.

Former ECHL commissioner Patrick J. Kelly — who the ECHL championship trophy is named after — was on the radio in Toledo, Ohio, Friday when he dropped a bombshell.

“I don’t know if I should say this or not, but Colorado kept the trophy, if you can believe it,” Kelly said on the Fox Morning Blitz on 1230 AM in Toledo. “They still have it. This is a new trophy.”

The Eagles, of course, won back-to-back Kelly Cups in 2017 and 2018. They left the league after winning last season to move up to the American Hockey League as the top minor league affiliate of the Colorado Avalanche.

The Eagles released a short statement Friday afternoon attributed to owner Martin Lind, saying the Eagles have the trophy but have unsuccessfully tried to return it.

Fan-rumor has cited an issue related to a large sum of money withheld from the Eagles by the ECHL after the owners left for their AHL gig.  If true, this hostage situation makes more sense.

Puh-leeze. Have they never heard of the USPS, FedEx, UPS,  DHL, Greyhound Package Express, etc? How do they get their equipment, merchandise, and other supplies shipped to them?
