Will 3-on-3 Hockey Become an Alternate Standard?

Recommended Posts

When I first read about the 3ICE traveling hockey tournament league concept back in January, I thought it would quickly melt away.  But I've heard & read more discussion lately about reduced squad hockey play alternatives as leagues & organizations at many levels struggle to respond to the restrictions imposed by the Coronavirus pandemic.

So now I'm wondering how North American hockey fans would react - including SPHL fans - to a game with 3 skaters (or maybe 4) on a side.  I'm warming (in a manner of speaking) to the concept for practical reasons, though it doesn't solve the social distancing challenges ahead for fans like me who prefer to attend hockey games rather than watch them remotely.  What say you?

I am too much of a traditionalist, so I doubt I would like it. However if it comes down to this or not having anything, I will take this.

How does the rink compare to a regular sized rink?

If you mean for the 3ICE league, they will be playing in existing facilities on existing ice surfaces.  No specific venues announced yet.  Play starting in Summer 2021.

One certainly could not play effective defense while maintaining 6 feet of separation from an attacking player!

Zdeno Chara could do it.

OK, there's the "one". 😂 🥶

Both Victor Hedman (Tampa Bay) and Dougie Hamilton (Carolina) are 6'-6" D-men, qualifying for the NHL's stick length exemption along with Zdeno.  Once again, size matters.

Oops, and I missed a few more: Tyler Myers (VAN) at 6'-8"; Jamie Oleksiak (DAL) at 6'-7"; Nicholas Hague (VGK) at 6'-6" (though he was NHL/AHL this past season).  Is that enough, Perfesser?

That seems like a lot of space for so few people.
