Member Map - need some input!

Recommended Posts

To our new RiverKings friends, welcome to the SPHL Forums.

One feature we have is a member map, which allows us to highlight member locations and point out spots in the various locations where to eat, sleep, and shop while visiting.

I've added the Desoto Civic Center to the map already. You're welcome to add your location if you'd like. I will have to add other spots manually.

If you all would be so kind as to suggest spots on the map for food, lodging, and places to visit while in town, I'll add them to the map.

Sponsors' businesses are also encouraged. If they have a store and visitors can patronize their location that is what I want to add to the map.

Check over the map in other cities and look at what's on there so far. Post your suggestions here and I'll add them as I get time.

Thanks and welcome again to the SPHL!

Desoto County Tourism web site is at http://www.sodesoto.com/ . How do you want suggestions done, here on the board, or by e-mail or other method? While we are part of the Memphis Metro area, I prefer promoting places in Desoto County or across northwest Mississippi, including the casinos in Tunica County, which are less than 30 minutes from the DCC.

Here on the board is fine.

Name of the business and an address/phone if there is one. I can look up what info you may omit.

I added the Zoo, Graceland, some places on Beale St. and some other spots. If there's a team official hotel, restaurant, etc, that's even better. Corporate sponsors of the team we'll place on the map, and they dont even have to be a business with a lobby.

I've got a few sponsors for the league such as equipment provider Sherbrooke and Molson Canada. So far the only business I didn't add was a strip Gentleman's Club in Lafayette that I think was a sponsor of the IceGators.

Other than that I'm flexible. :)

In addition to sponsors and the like, think of places you'd recommend friends (or visiting teams' fans) go to while they're in town, so they come away with a good experience.

Speed, is there any way to rate the places on the map? Just because someplace is a sponsor or a well-known location, doesn't guarantee it's a place I'd recommend for out-of-town guests to patronize. Listing lots of places near the arena is great - until I want to pick a good one.

No there's not a rating system incorporated into this map unfortunately.

OK, I'll bite...no doubt I will have left some things off, but hopefully I will have plenty of company and/or critics here soon....

The DCC (Desoto Civic Center) is at Exit 287 off Interstate 55

At that exit, you only have two small hotels

Key West Inn, 5115 Pepper Chase Drive, Southaven, MS 38671, 662-280-8826

Magnolia Inn & Suites, 5069 Pepper Chase Dr, Southaven, MS 38671, 662-280-5555

I think the visiting team may have been at one of these, but can't remember which.

One really good sit-down restaurant with liquor service

Boiling Point, 4975 Pepper Chase Dr, Southaven, MS 38671, 662-280-7555

a smaller pizza place a little further down the road

Pepperoni’s Pizzeria, 1104 Church Rd W, Southaven, MS, 662-280-7050

and a host of fast-food places either right by the exit or over the hill to the west

Sonic Drive-In, 899 Church Rd W, Southaven, MS 38671, 662-393-2987

Subway, 4935 Pepper Chase Dr, Suite 100, Southaven, MS 662-342-1804

McDonald’s, 4952 Pepper Chase Dr, Southaven, MS 38671, 662-796-2000

Waffle House, 406 Church Rd W, Southaven, MS, 38671, 662-280-1314

Taco Bell, 580 Church Rd W, Southaven, MS 38671, 662-280-5297

Quizno’s, 1100 Church Rd W, Southaven, MS 38671, 662-253-8318

Casa Mexicana, 1100 Church Rd W, Southaven, MS 38671, 280-5160

you also have a great pizza place about a mile away - deep dish pizza for those who love it like I do

Wiseguys Chicago Pizza, 5441 Highway 51 N, Horn Lake, MS, 662-342-5334

The great majority of places to eat and stay, closest to the DCC, are off Exit 289, Goodman Road - literally dozens of choices and styles.

Hope this helps, and hope the RK front office starts sending along the sponsors, so we can be sure to spend some time, and some money, with them this year.

What if you added stars (*) to the name of the business?

Honestly, to go back and edit the entry in the map tool I have to use is a pain in the @$$. It's easy to create and entry, but to edit it, not so much...

The map's good for referencing where things are in relation to the area. I'd still hit the locals up for the goods on where to go in the forums themselves. :)

If there's a way to do a ranking system later on we can see about incorporating it in.

Now, most of the spots that I entered in were recommended by the board members themselves. Others (like Louisiana) I had to look up from the IG web site and google'd them. Still, others like the Air Force Armament Museum in P-cola I have visited and added from having been there.

Thanks. Added most of them. I didn't add the fast-food places. Most people will find them anywhere, plus I don't know many who would recommend a Mickey D's for fine dining... :)

EDIT: If the fast food joint is a typical gathering spot before/after a game for the fans, I'll consider adding it.

Though it hasn't opened yet (will be open before hockey season), Mid-South Ice House is the area's only public ice skating facility.

Goodman Rd, the next exit North of the DCC is a haven for resturants, hotels, movie theaters, car dealers, Wal-Mart, etc.

O'Charley's, IHOP, Chili's, Steak and Shake, Fazoli's, Chick Fil A; Backyard Burgers, La Hacienda (very good Mexican cuisine), Outback Steakhouse, Firehouse Subs, Milano's Pizza, Logans Roadhouse, another steak place whose name escapes me right now, On The Border, Olive Garden, Red Lobster, Fox and Hound, Hooters, KFC, Cracker Barrel, Arby's, Wendy's, Sonic, Buffalo Wild Wings, etc. Finding someplace to eat isn't a problem, there's Japanese and Chinese too.

Hotels, depending on your price range and particular needs.

http://www.hotels-rates.com/Southaven/MS/usa/

There's a Malco movie theater with something like 12 theaters inside. There are numerous golf courses in the area, but the golfers here are better able to name them, the only one I can think of is North Creek, where the players stay.

By the way Southaven Towne Center is easier to get to from the next exit North, in particular for out of towners. If you zoom in on the map you can see Towne Center Dr.

The franchise food chains I won't need (Steak n Shake, IHOP, BYB, etc) but I'm not familiar with La Hacienda, Milano's, The Border, Fox and Hound. If you have info on these (web sites especially) I can post them. I might include Buffalo Wild Wings and Logan's as a means of indicating that there are eateries on those exits.

I changed the mall's location marker.

One good spot for a pregame meal is "the Filling Station" which is between the Harley dealership and the Civic Center. Also located at the next exit north of the Civic center (Goodman Road) there is about every chain restaurant one could imagine and several good hotels ( Comfort Suite, Drury Inn, and numerous others.) They are a 5 minute drive from the Rink.

Most all of the suggestions I've added to the map thus far. If I've missed any lemme know. Most of the "big box" obvious choices (McDonald's, Subway, Walmart, gas stations, etc) have not been added since they can be found pretty much anywhere.

Any more attractions, good dining (non-fast food unless its a gathering spot for fans before/after games) and sponsor locations are what I'm looking for.

If the sponsor has a lobby, showroom, or some place where people can physically walk in for service is what I'm interested in. Such as a oil change location, restaurant, casino, arcade, etc.

Not necessarily interested in car dealerships unless they're a major sponsor.
